 The Street Child

Knowledge Organiser

Our key text this term will be Street Child by Berlie Doherty.
This powerful historical story follows Jim Jarvis, a young boy living in Victorian London, as he faces life in a harsh workhouse and the dangers of surviving on the streets alone. Through Jim’s journey, pupils will explore themes of resilience, hope, compassion and the realities of poverty during the 1860s.

In our wider curriculum work, we will be learning about what life was like for children in Victorian times, including workhouses, child labour and the beginnings of organisations like Dr Barnardo’s homes. This text will help the children make connections between history and literature, develop empathy and deepen their understanding of how children’s lives have changed over time.
