King's Gate Primary School

School Council

Children at King's Gate Primary produced their manifesto's, held elections and voted for the pupils that would represent them on the School Council. The ballot papers were counted and the successful candidates for each class were announced and presented with their School Council badges in our Celebration Assembly by Councillor Robert Yuill.

What is our School Council?

Our School Council is a team of enthusiastic, thoughtful and passionate pupils who have been chosen by their classmates to represent their voices and help make our school the best it can be! Think of it as our very own mini government — run by pupils, for pupils!

Why do we have one?

Because your voice matters.

Our School Council gives every pupil the chance to have their opinions heard, ideas shared, and concerns acted on. This links directly to Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child — which says all children have the right to express their views and be listened to when decisions are made that affect them.

But that’s not all! Being part of the council also helps develop brilliant life skills like leadership, teamwork, public speaking and problem-solving. It’s a fantastic way to learn about democracy, citizenship and how to make a real difference in our school community and beyond.

What do we do?

Our School Council meets every Thursday afternoon, and it’s always a buzzing hive of ideas!

We:

  • Share and discuss feedback from our classmates
  • Suggest ways to improve school life
  • Plan exciting fundraising events
  • Decide how we can spend money raised to make our school even better!

Right now, we’re raising funds for new benches for our playground and exciting new playtime equipment. We’re also proud to say that we’ve already raised enough money to buy stage lighting for our school hall – perfect for making our productions shine even brighter!

Looking ahead, we’re in the early stages of planning opportunities for parents and carers to come in and talk about their jobs, helping to inspire and inform our pupils about the many different roles and careers out there. We’ve also started to explore the idea of contacting local businesses to create community links, and possibly gain sponsorship or support for school projects in the future.

It’s all about teamwork, ambition, and making positive changes — one idea at a time!

Being part of the School Council means stepping up, speaking out, and helping to shape the future of our school. We’re proud to have such passionate pupils working together to create positive change – and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next!
