Why is it necessary to learn times tables?
Much of the key learning of multiplication tables takes place during Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4. Children who know their multiplication tables up to 12 x 12 (with a good understanding as well as quick recall) cope better with the demands of the maths curriculum in many areas, such as formal written division, equivalent fractions, percentages and ratio and proportion. The mathematics curriculum in Upper Key Stage 2 is built upon a good understanding of multiplication and division and recall of the multiplication tables.
Multiplication Tables Check
The multiplication tables check (MTC) was introduced by the Department for Education and is statutory for primary schools. It is administered to Year 4 in June.
The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether pupils can recall their times tables fluently, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will help teachers to identify pupils who have not yet mastered their times tables, so that additional support can be provided.

Purple Mash
Purple Mash is an excellent software package that your child can utilise to practise their times tables using the same format they will for the Multiplication Tables Check. Each child has been given their own individual Purple Mash username and password. This is stuck into their home link books. Using this log on will provide full access to all of the available resources. This will also allow your child to save any work they have completed.
FunKey Cards
We have started using FunKey Cards during lessons as a fun and interactive way for children to learn their times tables. There are many games and activities which can be played and these can be purchased here: https://www.funkeymaths.com/shop/
Hit the Button
Hit the Button is an interactive maths game with quick fire questions on number bonds, times tables, doubling and halving, multiples, division facts and square numbers. The games, which are against the clock, challenge and develop mental maths skills. Hit the Button is available for free on the Top Marks website. An untimed, practise mode is available in the Hit the Button app.
